Affinity ID

After freelancing for the last seven odd years I'm pleased to announced that I've taken a permanent role as Senior Creative at Affinity ID. I'm looking forward to the challenge and working with a great team of people who are bloody good at what they do along with some great clients to boot!

This means that I'm no longer available for freelance projects :)

Toyota Believe wins Fair go Ad Awards

Congrats to the team at Saatchi & Saatchi for their well deserved win in the Fair Go Ad Awards. For the uninitiated Fair Go is a television program dedicated to helping out consumers from getting ripped off by products, services and small print that's just not fair! Every year the people of New Zealand get to vote for the best and worst ads for the year.

I worked on the digital side of the Believe project and boy it was a whopper!

You can view the winning television commercial here.

Freelancing in Melbourne published on Australian INfront

My recent article Freelancing in Melbourne was republished on Australian INfront where it has received quite well by the digital community. Tim O'Neil from Reactive tweeted "Great article, all agency GMs should read it."

You can read the article at Australian INfront, participate and contribute to the discussion!

1 Million times 2

New Zealand has a population of 4 million people. Not all of them have an internet connection mind you so I'm blown away at the stats of two projects that I worked on this year.

The first one was a home page takeover for BNZ in which a bunch of rugby players tackled the home page and proceeded to pull the page apart in the process. The animation was designed to play automatically once only (it's a banking website after all) but it turns out customers were replaying the animation constantly.

The other project was for MTV NZ (sadly closing down soon) hunting for a new presenter which was facilitated by the website I designed. Contestants had to upload a video of themselves and persuade the rest of New Zealand to vote for them. Almost 1000 entries later and more than 1 million votes over a 6 week period the contestants are now battling it out for the top spot and a chance to be MTV famous.

Raffles College of Design and Commerce

I was invited by Photographer and lecturer Leanne Miller to show my Image Nation presentation to the Design and Photography students at Raffles College of Design and Commerce. It's been a while since I've been in a Design School and it brought back great memories of being a student. I hope to do it more often.

Image Nation

I recently spoke at Image Nation, a photography conference organised by the Advertising & Illustrative Photographers Association in Auckland. Being surrounded by renowned advertising and editorial photographers - including Michael Hall, Juliet TaylorCharles HowellsSimon DevittTim WhiteDiederik Van HeyningenNick TresidderJocelyn CarlinDavid Read and Caleb Smith as well as globally recognised executive creative director Mike O'Sullivan, multi-award winning magazine designer Jenny Nicholls meant that I was in great company!

My presentation was about bridging the gap between photographers and digital media. Digital creative's are usually so far removed from the photographic process that our work suffers big time. I hope what I presented plants some seeds in changing this current relationship and make for greater digital work in New Zealand.

I received strong interest in the animation I put together for the conference, of which I have put up on youtube for all to view and share.

The presentation has been picked up by Admedia, see it here.

Australianinfront - Roundup 17.5.2010

I was featured in Roundup, the weekly email by Australian INfront after submitting my work to the directory. Australian INfront has gone through a major revamp over the last few months and it's great to see that it's going from strength to strength.

The Loop

I've added my work to The Loop, a fantastic looking directory of Australian creative's. The ease of use in which projects are assembled together demonstrates how things should be done. Now, if only they include flash files for us digital creative's!

The Pond

After moving to Auckland I found myself wanting to spend more time working and less time looking for work. It's always difficult starting a network from scratch and it made much more sense to join the wonderful people at The Pond.

The Pond is set up as a consultancy with the long-term view of supporting these professionals' creative aspirations (whether it be advertising, design, interactive, art or even novels), while also providing a business interface for clients to tap into.

Schmap Guides is a downloadable travel guide that is easily up datable ensuring users get the latest up to date travel information. There's nothing worse than visiting a place that doesn't exist in an out of date guide book! In a pioneering move Schmap uses photography by flickr users that allow use under the Creative Commons Attribution License. We're seeing more of this happening and it's a great way for companies and organisations to get to use great photos without paying for it.
